Danny Lyon. Photographer / Filmmaker. USA.

I’m reading Jonathan Lethem’s The Fortress of Solitude, about a white kid growing up in Brooklyn in the 1970s. Gentrification, urbanism, graffiti, the beginning of rap music – all themes in the life + the book.
As these things go, I stumbled across a bunch of photos of Brooklyn in the 1970s – taken by Danny Lyon for DOCUMERICA, a program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency.
And so, Brooklyn summertime, stoop-sitting, graffiti and concrete playgrounds.

Greg Miller. Photographer. New York, New York.

Greg Miller’s series of swimmers’ portraits. The top two are from a series shot on a large format 8×10 camera, entitled Asser Levy Pool from 1995.
The bottom two are from a follow-up shoot at the same pool, this summer. They were shot on an absurd-looking polaroid camera (pictured).
Nothing like a city swim…

James R. Murphy. Photographer / Educator. New York.

I found these photos on a website that is curated by a teacher named James R. Murphy. He used string figures as a way to teach students math. Robin Moore was a student in his class in the 1980s and she took this set of photos.
There are about 60 really great photos here.
I chose smiling subjects but there are also stern faces, serious mugs. All with strings!

Gerhard Riebicke. Photographer. Germany.

‘Nude Culture’ was a movement in 1920s Germany. Gerhard Riebicke was there, documenting scores of Aryans jumping, playing, shooting bows-and-arrows, naked.
I’m not so into nudism, but I frequently swim naked. And I less frequently bike naked.

Ed Templeton. Photographer. California.

Ed Templeton is a pro skater. He also takes really great photos. Most of his work documents the youth culture – skateboarding, smoking, loving. I guess I like it because that’s really what life in the suburbs is about. And I’m just another product of it all.
