Posters. Bullfights. The Spanish World.

Hemingway makes me want to fight bulls. Or, participate in the revelry associated with the sport.
Plus, these posters are great.

Bureau of Prohibition. 1920-1933. United States.

The Bureau of Prohibition spent the 20s busting kegs and keg-parties. Basically a total buzz kill for those of us who like to party. Tonight, in the spirit of the speakeasy past, the North Common Brewers’ Union is hosting a night of underground drinking. Homebrewed liquor will be served all night…

Yann Gross. Photographer. Swiss.

Yann Gross focuses his photography on community and subcultures. Naturally, these photos of the first skate park in East Africa fit well – with no pavement to skate, these Ugandan youth built the park in a Kampala suburb without any government or large NGO support.
Pretty impressive – both the photos and the skate scene.
You can find more of Gross’ photos on his website.

Friday is the first Critical Mass Bike Ride of the spring season. I’m excited – I made a poster, built a new bike and found these three photos on the interweb. If you’re in Halifax, meet me at Victoria Park at 6 pm on Friday evening. If you’re in another city, find the city-wide-ride and join it. It’s the most wholesome fun of the month.

Robert Semeniuk. Documentary Photographer. Albertan / Canadian.

I found Among the Inuit at the bookstore where I work. I was working, so I didn’t have much time to browse but the images I saw were great. I’ve been pretty obsessed with the arctic these days, so the subject matter is right up my alley.
After a quick image search, it seems Semeniuk has taken photos all over the world. The latter two are of a child in Gaza and the tattooed chest of a Karen child soldier. More photos can be found here.

John L. Sullivan. Irish-American. Heavyweight Champion of the World, 1881-1892.

John Sullivan’s a true Irishman. He studied at the seminary but ended up being the last bareknuckle heavyweight champion of the world, taking the prize in 75 rounds in 1889.
I’m not Irish, but I do love the culture – their whiskey, their women, their fighting spirit.

Breaking Away. 1979.

My favourite bike film. It has everything – bikes, class struggle, girls, coming-of-age, summer-sun and fake Italian accents.
