Gerda Taro. Photographer. German in Spain. 1910-1937.

Gerda Taro is often considered the first female photojournalist to cover a war from the front lines – and to die while doing so. She covered the Spanish Civil War with her partner Robert Capa. The first photo is a portrait of Taro by Capa. The latter three are photos by Taro. I especially like the photo of the Republican militiawoman taking a knee, taking an aim.

  1. These photos are great. I’m a bit obsessed with the Spanish Civil War… and Catalonia in particular. Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia is part of the reason I chose to live in French Catalonia.
